
A flickering light, a warm plug socket or a circuit breaker that keeps tripping can be easy to put off when life is busy. But these are often early warnings that an electrical installation needs attention. This home electrical safety guide explains the practical checks homeowners can make, the hazards that require immediate action, and when a qualified electrician should take over.
Electrical safety is not about being alarmed by every minor issue. It is about recognising the difference between a simple appliance problem and a fault that could cause electric shock, fire or damage to your property. For homes across London and Kent, this is especially relevant where older wiring, extensions, loft conversions and high electrical demand can place added pressure on an installation.
Your consumer unit, sometimes called a fuse box, is the control centre for the electrical circuits in your home. A modern unit should have clearly labelled circuits and residual current device protection, commonly known as RCD protection. An RCD is designed to disconnect the power quickly if it detects a fault that could cause an electric shock.
If your consumer unit has old-style rewireable fuses, visible signs of overheating, a damaged cover or circuits that are not clearly identified, arrange an inspection. Older equipment is not automatically unsafe, but it may not provide the same level of protection as a modern installation. The right recommendation depends on the condition of the wiring, the property layout and the work that has been carried out over the years.
Most RCDs have a test button. Manufacturers commonly recommend testing this function at regular intervals, but always follow the instructions on your unit. Before pressing the button, be aware that it will turn off the circuits it protects. If the RCD does not trip, or it will not reset afterwards, do not keep forcing it. Electrical faults do not always announce themselves with a complete power failure. More often, they show up as repeated small problems. The risk increases when several high-load appliances are supplied from one extension lead or adaptor.
Avoid daisy-chaining extension leads, where one lead is plugged into another. It can overload the first lead and make the arrangement difficult to monitor. Multi-socket extension leads should be fully unwound before use, particularly when supplying high-demand appliances. A coiled cable can overheat under load.
Portable heaters, tumble dryers, washing machines, dishwashers and kettles draw significant power. Where possible, plug them directly into a suitable wall socket rather than a low-quality adaptor. If you routinely need more sockets in one area, additional fixed sockets are safer and more practical than a permanent collection of extension leads.
Damaged leads should be taken out of use. Look for cracked insulation, bent plug pins, exposed wires, loose plug tops or cables trapped under furniture and doors. Never cover leads with rugs to hide them. Aside from causing wear, this makes damage and overheating harder to spot.
Bathrooms, kitchens, utility rooms and outdoor spaces need particular care because water increases the risk of electric shock. In bathrooms, electrical equipment must be suitable for its location and installed with the required protection. A standard socket beside a basin or bath is not a DIY job waiting to happen - it is a clear reason to call a professional.
Use appliances with dry hands and keep chargers, extension leads and portable electrical items away from sinks, baths and open windows. If a socket, light fitting or consumer unit has been affected by a leak, flooding or water ingress, switch off the supply only if you can do so safely. Do not use the affected electrical system until it has been assessed.
Outside, use equipment designed for outdoor conditions and ensure garden sockets have appropriate protection. Temporary leads across patios, paths or lawns can be damaged by foot traffic, gardening tools and weather. For regular outdoor use, a properly installed external socket is a safer long-term option.
Replacing a lamp shade or changing a plug fuse may be manageable for a competent person following the manufacturer’s instructions. Altering circuits, adding sockets, replacing a consumer unit, installing bathroom electrics or working on fixed wiring is different. Poor workmanship can leave defects hidden behind walls and ceilings until they cause a fault later.
Some domestic electrical work must meet Building Regulations requirements, and certain work may need to be notified through the correct process. A qualified electrician can assess the existing installation, complete the work correctly, test it and provide the relevant certification. Be especially cautious after a renovation. New kitchens, extensions, loft conversions and garden offices can substantially change electrical demand. Fixed wiring is only one part of household electrical safety. Appliances can develop faults through wear, moisture, overheating or damage to their leads. Chargers deserve attention too. Use suitable, undamaged charging equipment and avoid leaving phones, tablets or power banks on soft furnishings while charging. Beds, sofas and cushions can trap heat around a charger or device. Charging on a hard, clear surface is the safer choice.
Smoke alarms provide a vital final layer of protection, but they are not a substitute for safe electrics. Test alarms in line with the manufacturer’s guidance and replace batteries or units when required. If you have mains-powered alarms that are not working correctly, arrange for them to be checked rather than relying on a temporary workaround.
If you smell burning, see smoke from an electrical fitting, notice sparking, or suspect a serious fault, act quickly without putting yourself at risk. Do not touch damaged equipment, exposed cables or anything affected by water.
Never use water on an electrical fire. If you have a suitable fire extinguisher and have been trained to use it, follow the instructions. Your priority should always be getting people to safety.
An Electrical Installation Condition Report, or EICR, checks the condition of fixed wiring and identifies faults, deterioration and non-compliance that may affect safety. Landlords have specific legal duties to ensure electrical installations in rented homes are inspected and tested at the required intervals.
