
A flickering light is easy to dismiss, especially if it stops after a few seconds. But understanding why lights flicker can help you separate a simple lamp or bulb issue from an electrical fault that needs prompt attention. In a home, rental property or business premises, repeated flickering can point to a poor connection, an overloaded circuit, an ageing consumer unit or, less commonly, a problem with the incoming electrical supply.
The key is to look at the pattern. Is one light flickering, or several? Does it happen when a particular appliance starts? Are lights dimming and brightening across the property? These details help an electrician identify the fault safely and efficiently.
When only one fitting flickers, the cause is often local to that light rather than the whole electrical installation. Start with the obvious possibilities, but do not attempt repairs inside a light fitting or switch unless you are competent to do so and the circuit has been safely isolated.
A loose or incorrectly fitted bulb is a common cause. With the power switched off and the bulb cool, check that it is seated properly in the holder. If the bulb is old, replacing it with a quality equivalent may solve the issue. LED bulbs can also flicker when they are nearing the end of their working life, although a new LED that flickers repeatedly may indicate a compatibility problem instead.
Dimmer switches are another frequent source of flickering. Traditional dimmers were designed for incandescent lamps and may not work properly with LED bulbs. Even where an LED bulb is labelled dimmable, it needs to be paired with a suitable LED-compatible dimmer. A mismatch can cause flickering, buzzing, poor dimming range or lights that fail to switch off cleanly.
The fitting itself may be at fault. Loose internal terminals, a failing LED driver or heat damage around the lamp holder can interrupt the electrical connection. This is not a DIY diagnosis. A qualified electrician can test the fitting, inspect the connections and replace damaged components where appropriate.
Flickering in more than one room deserves closer attention, particularly where it occurs regularly or affects different circuits. Electrical connections should remain secure, but vibration, thermal movement, poor installation work and the age of a property can all contribute to loose connections over time.
A loose connection at a switch, junction box, light fitting, consumer unit or meter position can create resistance and intermittent power. As current passes through a poor connection, it can generate heat. That is why flickering lights accompanied by a hot switch, a burning smell, discolouration or crackling should be treated as urgent.
Do not keep resetting breakers or changing bulbs in the hope that the issue disappears. Switch off the affected circuit if it is safe to do so, avoid using the fitting and arrange for an electrician to investigate. If there is smoke, sparking or a strong burning smell, turn off the main switch only if this can be done safely, leave the area and seek urgent professional support.
Lights may briefly dip or flicker when an appliance with a high starting load switches on. Common examples include washing machines, tumble dryers, kettles, electric showers, air conditioning equipment, refrigeration compressors and larger workshop machinery.
A very brief change in brightness can occur in some installations, particularly in older properties. It should not, however, be severe, frequent or worsening. If lights noticeably dim whenever the same appliance runs, the circuit may be overloaded, the appliance may have a fault, or the electrical system may not be correctly designed for the demand placed on it.
This is particularly relevant in converted flats, HMOs, offices and properties that have been extended over time. Additional sockets, kitchen equipment, electric heating, EV chargers and modern lighting may have been added to an installation that was not upgraded to match. An electrician can assess the load on the circuits, inspect protective devices and advise whether alterations, a new circuit, a consumer unit upgrade or submain work is required.
Older wiring does not automatically mean an installation is unsafe. Its condition, design, previous alterations and test results matter far more than its age alone. However, recurring flickering can be one of several signs that an older installation needs professional inspection.
Properties with dated fuse boards, deteriorated accessories, mixed wiring types or a history of repeated electrical repairs should be assessed carefully. Modern consumer units use protective devices designed to improve safety and provide clearer fault protection. A replacement is not always the answer, but if testing identifies defects or inadequate protection, an upgrade may be the right long-term solution.
For landlords and property managers, unexplained flickering should not be ignored between scheduled inspections. In England, rented properties generally require a satisfactory Electrical Installation Condition Report, or EICR, at least every five years, or sooner if the report recommends it. A new fault should be investigated when it arises rather than left until the next inspection date.
If lights flicker throughout the property, including lights on different circuits, the issue may be outside your internal wiring. A supply fault, a loose neutral connection or work being carried out locally can affect voltage stability. Neighbours experiencing the same problem is a useful clue.
Contact your electricity network operator if there is a wider supply issue, particularly if you notice repeated loss of power in the area. If the flickering is limited to your property, or you are unsure where the fault lies, an electrician can inspect your installation first and help establish the most appropriate next step.
A suspected loose neutral should be treated seriously. It can cause lights to brighten and dim unpredictably and may damage sensitive equipment. Avoid running high-value electronics or major appliances until the cause has been checked.
You do not need to diagnose the fault yourself, but a few safe observations can make the visit more efficient. Note whether the problem affects one fitting, one room or the whole property. Observe whether it starts when a particular appliance is used and whether any circuit breaker trips at the same time.
Also look for signs of heat or damage without touching exposed electrical parts: a scorched switch plate, a loose fitting, buzzing, a burning smell or a consumer unit that feels unusually warm are all important details. Photograph visible damage only if it is safe to do so.
Avoid removing covers, opening the consumer unit or tightening electrical terminals. A fault can be concealed behind a fitting or within fixed wiring, and working on live or poorly isolated equipment creates a real risk of shock and fire.
A single flicker from one bulb may be resolved by replacing the bulb or correcting an LED and dimmer mismatch. The situation changes when flickering is persistent, affects multiple lights or appears alongside other warning signs.
Arrange urgent help if lights brighten and dim dramatically, breakers trip repeatedly, switches buzz or feel hot, you smell burning, see sparks, or notice damage around fittings and sockets. The same applies when lights flicker after water has entered a property, following building work, or after a new appliance has been connected.
For commercial premises, acting quickly also protects business continuity. Faulty lighting can create a safety risk for staff and visitors, while intermittent power can disrupt IT equipment, alarms, emergency lighting and essential operations. A planned inspection can identify whether the problem is a local fitting fault, a circuit issue or part of a wider installation concern.
